Human bodies are designed for movement, so a sedentary lifestyle and lack of movement have a significant impact.

People spend increasing amounts of time doing sedentary activities. They often sit while using a computer or smartphone, watching TV, or playing video games.

Many of our jobs have become more sedentary, with people sitting at desks for many hours, days, and even years. And the way most of us get around involves sitting in a car or bus. Having an inactive lifestyle can be one of the causes of many chronic diseases.

What Happens if You Don't Move as Often?

If you regularly lack movement, it will lower your immunity and motivation, increase your risk of lifestyle diseases, and cause premature mortality. You will burn fewer calories, and your metabolism will slow down.

Your heart becomes weaker because it is also a muscle that must be exercised. It affects blood flow, joints, nerve cells, elasticity of skin, your spine, and so on and on and on... It can also affect mental health with a higher risk of depression and anxiety.

Sedentary Lifestyle Health Risks

  • You may have poorer blood circulation.

  • You burn fewer calories and are more likely to gain weight.

  • You may lose muscle strength and endurance.

  • Your immune system may not work as well.

  • Your bones may get weaker.

  • Your body may have more trouble breaking down fats and sugars.

  • Your body may have more inflammation.

  • You may develop a hormonal imbalance.

There are so many health risks of an inactive lifestyle that I have personally experienced, and for each of them, moving my body or doing some form of activity was recommended to me by experts as a solution to the health problem.

Even for my previous car, which I kept in the garage for an extended period because I didn't need it, I was recommended to use it sometimes. Of course, I didn't, so the rust blocked some parts, and the car broke down a bit. Everyone and everything needs movement.

Ways to Add Movement to Your Daily Routine

  • Set a movement alarm every 30 or more minutes to remind you.

  • Stand up instead of sitting down whenever you can.

  • Take regular breaks to move a little while working in front of the computer or watching TV. It can be a short walk to the kitchen to get a glass of drink, a couple of body movements, or even a brief dance.

  • Take the stairs, not the lift.

  • Walk and talk. You don't have to sit while talking, even if you frequently use your phone for work and personal calls.

So, here, we are not talking about special exercises for strength, endurance, or preparation for the marathon of life. This is about pure logic and the functioning of our bodies, which require movement for proper work. It must be done every day for the rest of our lives.

How do I start moving more? In summary, everyday movement is effortlessly simple.

You should start with something simple, like an easy walk.

Everyday movements are fundamental to daily living. Sit less, move more!
